Hilltown Precedents

 

 

The design team carefully studied precedents from around the world for the most successful hill town design ideas.  We looked at the ways these towns took advantage of their steep terrain, and created places with a delicate weave of enclosures, views, privacy, open space, rhythm and texture.  

Center: Our colleague Douglas Duany sketches a number of hillside morphologies (in red pencil on yellow paper) from around Europe in 2002.

We also looked carefully at Bernard Maybeck's own hillside precedents in Berkeley, and other West Coast precedents such as Belvedere:
